A group of elephants on open savanna near forest edge Opinion
Editorial Board·July 24, 2026

Carbon offset markets need an honest referee, not more buyers

Voluntary carbon markets have grown faster than the verification systems meant to keep them credible. Until independent, well-funded auditing catches up with demand, every new offset purchased on good faith is a bet on paperwork nobody has fully checked. Fixing that is less exciting than launching new credits — and far more urgent.

Solar panels in a field with a wind turbine in the distance Analysis

Grid-scale renewables and forest protection are being pitted against each other — they shouldn't be

Siting fights between solar developers and conservationists are often framed as a binary trade-off. A closer look at recent permitting data suggests most of the real estate needed for the clean-energy transition doesn't require clearing intact forest at all.

Snow-capped mountains above a dense evergreen forest Opinion
Tomas Green·July 10, 2026

Stop calling every planted tree a "climate solution"

Not all reforestation is equal, and treating a monoculture plantation as interchangeable with a recovering native forest lets weak projects claim credit they haven't earned. Precision in language here isn't pedantry — it's the difference between funding that works and funding that doesn't.

How we separate opinion from reporting

Every piece on this page is a signed opinion or analysis article, written by a named member of our editorial team or an invited outside contributor. These pieces reflect the views of their authors and are not run through the same sourcing requirements as our news reporting.

We keep this section visually and structurally separate from our Blog for a reason: readers should always be able to tell, at a glance, whether they're reading a reported story or an argument.

Opinion pages exist to be disagreed with. Ours are no exception — write to us.
