About PlanetNexa

Journalism built for the pace of a forest, not a news cycle.

We report on the ecosystems, species and communities that rarely make the front page — until something goes wrong. We'd rather cover the slow, unglamorous work that keeps that from happening.

Our Mission

Cover the forest, not just the fire.

PlanetNexa was founded on a simple frustration: most environmental coverage only shows up after a wildfire, a flood, or a species hits the endangered list. By then, the more useful story — the years of decisions, funding, and neglect that led there — has already gone unreported.

We publish weekly, original reporting on forests, wildlife and climate, written by journalists and researchers who spend real time in the field. No aggregation, no wire-copy rewrites — every story on PlanetNexa starts with our own sourcing.

Our Story

How PlanetNexa got started

2019 — Founding

A small newsletter, three founding writers

PlanetNexa began as a weekly email covering timber policy and wildfire funding in the Pacific Northwest, written by a handful of former newsroom environment reporters who felt the beat deserved more room to breathe.

2021 — Expansion

Wildlife and climate desks added

As readership grew beyond the region, we brought on dedicated wildlife and climate correspondents and widened our coverage to conservation reporting across multiple continents.

2023 — Editorial desk launches

Space for argument, not just reporting

We introduced a separate Editorial section so that opinion and analysis would never blur into our news reporting — a distinction we take seriously.

Today

An independent, reader-supported publication

PlanetNexa remains independently owned, publishing weekly and answering to our readers rather than a single advertiser or interest group.

What Guides Us

Our editorial values

Accuracy first

Every figure and claim is checked against primary sources or named experts before publication. We correct errors publicly and promptly.

Time in the field

We prioritize reporting that required someone to actually visit the forest, the village, or the agency office in question.

Independence

PlanetNexa is reader-supported. We disclose funding sources and keep advertising clearly separated from editorial content.
